MULTEDO OIL TERMINAL
The Multedo/Pegli Oil Terminal is one of the biggest over Italy and Mediterranean
together with the Terminals of Trieste and Marseille. It has an outstanding leadership
for oil's traffic and here in Italy is well considered before the other important
terminals of Augusta,Melilli and Sarroch.Multedo Oil Terminal is able to handle
30 millions of Tons of products per year;a 2000 kms long pipe line connects the
terminal to the most important european and northern italy refineries. The total
surface on which the terminal stands is 345000 sqm ,13400 of which are land areas.
Since 1960,when it was on the beginning,this terminal has been continuosly modernized;
actually it is based on an inner port with 4 main piers able to gather up to 8
tankers and 1 long westerly wharf for special chemical products and able to gather
up to 4 small tankers. This wharf is equipped with special gears according to the
products treated. The 4 main piers are called ALFA - BETA - DELTA and GAMMA and they
are full operative on both sides (West and East sides). The Oil Terminal is well
sheltered from the sea by a long breakwater,a quite water channel and the large
airport's esplanade.

FIREFIGHTING
A special mention must be done for the safety gears and equipments fitted to the
oil terminal. There is a modern and highly efficient fire fighting and extinguishing
systems;this can operate either with sea water or chemical foam by means of several
turrets equipped with fire hoses and water plugs likely guns by an high powered
jet.The delivery of these numerous turrets has been studied and realized with the
strategy to cover as much as possible each part and side of the terminal in a very
capillary way.New and modern sensors have been distributed everywhere likewise
a large number of cameras by means of which the operators of the terminal are on
duty watch continuosly in order to prevent accidents and to assure a prompt, quick
and efficient intervention of the fire brigate, local means and special equipped
crafts always on stand by and alert.
PLATFORM-ISLAND OIL TERMINAL (SPM)
Outside the inner side of the oil terminal there are two other discharging plants.
The first one is called ISOLA (ISLAND);it is a round and flat platform
with a central low tower on which stretch a long arm. This arm provides to
connected the manifolds with cargo hoses by means of flexible pipe lines just at
its end,a little bit above the water. This arm is steel framed and curved till to
reach quite the sea water level.Still there is possible to fasten the tanker by
means of a big mooring hook on which take place the big mooring line between the
platform and the ship. One tug provides all the time to keep by stern side the ship
safely and steady in position.Inside the tower, just in the middle, there is a small
room recovering the operators and the equipments which allow to watch all the time
the oil's flow,so to order,in case of any anomaly,to disconnect promptly the cargo
hoses and pick up the moorings. The ISLAND it can work properly with rough
sea up to force 3/4;after this is better to disconnect the hoses and mooring line.
The ISLAND is able to receive tankers up to 500000 GRT with a draft of
50 mt;the connection with the coastal tanks is granted by means of an underwater
pipe line by 15,8 mt of diameter laying on the sea bottom. The distance from the
near breakwater is 1400 mt.
SINGLE BUOY OIL TERMINAL (B.A.L.M.)
The Single Buoy,Bottom Anchoring Line Mooring
is anchored to the bottom on 64,2 mt of depth.
The ISLAND vice versa has a structure fixed on the bottom while the
BALM is full floating. It can receive tankers up to 270000 GRT.This buoys has been
completed so far on 1982 and is connected to the coastal tanks by means of an
underwater pipe line likely the ISLAND.For both structures is very high the
safe operating level.
