HISTORICAL BRIEFING
The original center of the harbour was founded before roman era at the feet of Sarzana Hill,the actual Old Wharf (Molo Vecchio) and it didn't has changed deeply untill XVII century.During the 2nd half of XIX century there were effected great enlarging works due to increasing of maritime trades. So far on 1903 was created the Port Administration so called CONSORZIO AUTONOMO DEL PORTO DI GENOVA.(C.A.P.).Most part of enlarging and modernizing works were made between 1903 and 1945.Ending World War II it was necessary to re-build a lot of structures heavily damaged from war events. Around ending of 60ies was planned a new growth of the port.It was extended from Old Original Docks till Polcevera Stream and Sampierdarena Blocks.The new plans were considering the complete moving of the Oil Areas from Ronco and Libia wharfs to the new oil terminal of Multedo.The further developing of new structures such as the new new Voltri Terminal Container was already included in the projects of 1964.In the meantime the existing areas were restructured and new course were given to the passengers flow.To see the Voltri's terminal full operating has been necessary to await the beginning of 1993.This Terminal is the most modern and full computerized all over the Mediterranean basin.Besides Columbus event,the story of this city has mainly remarks of a strong willing to extend its dominion all over surrounding cities.Ligurian peoples has a very a very original behaviour;since Romans begun the conquest of the italian lands they had to fight this proud and strong population.At least Roman Empire had the victory,but ligurian populations saved their proudness and fairless.Genoa's expansionism brought several and continuous destructive wars against neighbour cities;this wars were bloody and destructive for everyone. The Genoa's power in the maritime trades is still oppressive and become stronger and stronger.The city has received a world wide wellknown fame for birth of Columbus. But this great seafarer has received only this,not helps or ships for his exploring voyages.On 1992 there were great celebrations for 500th anniversary of America's discovery;the city has received wide investments and several operas were built just to improve his trades and increasing (looking to the future) touristic amusements such as Aquarium,Expo area and new yachting facilities. All the rest is today's hystory with all events that has signed this ending of XX century.

Since 1969 Genoa has fitted to serve properly the containers traffic.Many existing areas and new ones have been allotted to this purpose.The traffic concerning containers has been based on the following terminals:
TERMINAL No.1 (Sanita' Quay).This one has been completed on 1987 and his peculiarity is the high technology and authomation.It lays over a surface of 165000 sqm with berthings for 500 lmt.Fittings of this terminal are: Nos.4 PORTAINERS Cranes SWL.45 Tonns and 8 TRANSTAINERS Cranes,6 of which are on rails and 2 on rubber wheels.Total storage area is 50000 sqm for 60000 TEUS included a special area for refrigerated containers.
TERMINAL No.2 (LIBIA-CANEPA-RONCO Wharfs) Total handling capacity is 350000 TEUS/Year,it lays over a 400000 sqm surface with berthings for 1200 lmt.Storage total areas are 265000 sqm with sheltered hangars of 17000 sqm.Terminal's fittings are: Nos.6 PORTAINERS and 11 TRANSTAINERS by 45 Tonns. A wide number of fork lifts and self powered cranes they complete the fittings. This Terminal is also called MULTIPURPOSE and is able to operate either containers traffic or general bulk goods.
TERMINAL No.3 (VOLTRI Basin).This is the most specialized structure all over the Mediterranean Basin.Berthings for 1400 lm are able to assure full operations for 3 container ships of last generation,post panamax type. Besides container ship,the terminal can grant berthings for 3 RoRo vessel type. Voltri's Basin is well connected to the railroad tracks and toll roads.The terminal is quite near to the airport,so this give more strenght and efficiency to the general and full connection for Railroad-Airways-Toll Road-Sea traffics.
BULK-ORE TERMINAL
Main areas involved are those based on the wharfs of Ponte Rubatino,Ponte Idroscalo, Ponte San Giorgio,for minerals; Bettolo quay is particularly specialized for Kaolin,Talc and similar.
All the whole enjoins of 102324 sqm with berthings for 1800 mt.
TERMINAL RORO.
This Terminal is situated over Ponte Etiopia,Inglese quay,Massaua quay,Ponte Eritrea and Mogadiscio quay. The total surface available is 202000 sqm with berthings for 1900 mt.
FRUIT TERMINAL
It is organized with large and modern warehouses by 15000 sqm alongside th western side of Ponte Somalia wharf,with an operating lenght of 390 mt. Fruit handling has very flattering data.The total Terminal surface,including refrigerated warehouses is 24000 sqm.
COLD TERMINAL
It is situated on the opposite side of Ponte Somalia wharf with a capacity of 16264 cm,900 sqm of surface and 200 mt for berthing.
The packed cold goods are handled by 3 authomatic elevators.
OIL TERMINAL
This one has been developped at the west side of the Old Ponte Paleocapa,S.Canzio quay and Mineral Oil quay.The Chem-Oil pole enjoins of 70000 sqm of areas and berthings for 2 Tankers and 3 Chemical carriers.Storage capacity is 6900 cm for Chemical products type A and B ; while 9000 cm is the capacity for Chemicals type C . The oil products capacity is 17000 cm.
PASSENGER TERMINAL
The old maritime station of Ponte dei Mille has been completely re-structured and modernized.It can offer berthings for 658 mt and 4 Passenger Ship alongside all together.The new Terminal,with its inward de luxe fittings ,can offer a lot of facilities and services for passengers in transit:a fantastic whole made of Bars,Restaurants,Ice Creameries,Telephone Points,Bank Offices,Fitness centers, Exhibition Spaces,Duty Free shops,First Aid stations and everything can be attractive and of interest for passengers.
RORO-PASSENGER TERMINAL
It is based on the areas of Ponte Doria and Ponte Colombo,where the TIRRENIA Society has build her own structures for receiption of passengers and many other services. Very high is the level of the traffic of passengers for/from the islands,particularly during the Summertime.The traffic has been valued into 2 millions per year.
